Read versus Watch

Oedipus Rex is the first play that I have read. This play is really an interesting play to read so that i can't stop reading until I finish it. In this play, I really experiencing the feeling of fear and pity towards the main character, King Oedipus. The element of Moira(fate) that had been cast upon him since the day he was born really make me pity him. His ignorant, as a seer human, leads him to his downfall. Although he is a great king towards the Thebans, he was fated to lead a dark, lonely day at the end of his life.

While watching the movie on Oedipus Rex, i found it quite similar to the story. Throughout the story, chorus had played the important role in telling the audience about the current situation. in the movie, the chorus is represent by a group of man wearing black robe, wanders around and telling the people about what had happened. It is completely different from what I have imagine while I am reading the text. In my own opinion, the colour of the robe is one of the way to emphasize the dark fate that Oedipus will later experience.

The movie watching session somehow helps me to understand the play especially about the plague.

Oedipus is so wretched right???
I wonder how can a man faces such a fate. and the movie made me tremble a bit as the play is a close resemblance of the script thus I can see more clearly the plot of the story. I really am greatful that we get to learn and enjoy this great Greek play together and hope we can appreciate the memory of learning this play...

In my opinion, going through this piece of drama in class has enlightened me a lot. Before this, just looking at the title itself would put me off from actually reading the drama. Trying to read it on my own during the term break was pretty dull to me. However, during the class with Dr Edwin on this drama, I found that the story wasn’t too dull after all. I see the sense of irony and how certain things have symbolisms of their own. Sophocles’ play, ‘Oedipus the King’ is one of the most well known of the Greek tragedies. After reading or viewing this play, it is perceptible to me that there are a few different themes and the one which catches my attention the most is the theme of blindness. Blindness can usually be defined as the failure of the eye to see, but according to this play, blindness is not always a physical quality, but a psychological imperfection some people posses. The writer uses physical blindness, as well as intellectual blindness to illustrate Oedipus' status as a tragic hero. In the end, I found that this drama actually makes sense to me and I came to actually like reading this drama despite it being a Greek theater.
